How do I Write my Personal Statement?
Why we ask for a personal statement, writing tips, and the two key topics to cover for your Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies (BALS) application.
Your personal statement is one of the most important parts of your Reach University application. It is our chance to get to know you and to understand your passion for education.
The Purpose
The personal statement helps our admissions team understand your dedication to working with children and your motivation for earning your Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies (BALS) degree. Because our program is job-embedded, we want to hear how your daily work in the classroom connects to your long-term goals.
Please Note: We are not looking for perfect essay structure or flawless academic writing, and our admissions team does not grade you on grammatical errors. What we care about most is your heart, your passion, and your commitment to teaching, and serving students in your local community.
Writing Guidelines
- Word Count: Aim for approximately 250 words (about 1 to 2 short paragraphs). Keep it focused, clear, and written in your own voice!
- How to Submit: You will type or copy-paste your personal statement directly into the designated text box inside your online application portal before submitting.
Your personal statement should directly address the following two topics:
- Why do you want to teach in your community?
- How can I ensure I'm ready to juggle the demands of college life; considering time and stress management, managing a monthly payment, and becoming a self-advocate (asking questions)?
Pro Tip: Write your statement in a Google Doc or Word document first to let your thoughts flow naturally, then paste it into your application when you are ready to submit!
