Expectations

The ECO is an accelerated, one-year program designed for experienced educators who already demonstrate the knowledge and skills of a proficient beginning teacher, as defined by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). ECO candidates complete the preservice course prior to the start of their first semester. During each semester, candidates participate in coaching, onsite mentorship, and a CalTPA support course. ECO candidates are exempt from the additional coursework required in the standard intern program.

The ECO program is a high-stakes credential pathway. Candidates must pass the CalTPA on their first attempt and within one year of program enrollment.

Candidates who do not pass the CalTPA on the first attempt are no longer eligible for the ECO pathway and must transition to the two-year Intern Program track. Candidates who do not pass the CalTPA on the first try are withdrawn from the ECO program but may re-enroll in a subsequent semester under the two-year program pathway.

Additional ECO program policies include:

  • ECO courses are non-credit-bearing, with the exception of the preservice course (Reach 210).
  • ECO candidates are not eligible to pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching; this option is available only to candidates enrolled in the traditional two-year Intern Program track.
  • Candidates who fail to demonstrate proficiency and a high level of professionalism, or who do not pass the CalTPA on the first attempt, will be removed from the ECO pathway and transitioned to the two-year Intern Program track.
  • Candidates who transition to the two-year track remain responsible for all ECO program fees incurred to date, in addition to the full tuition costs of the two-year Intern Program.
  • Multiple Subject ECO candidates must also pass the new Literacy TPA.
  • All ECO candidates must meet the requirements for teacher fitness.
