Praxis: How do I cover test expenses?

Some guidance on finding financial support to help cover text expenses, such as Praxis.

Glossary

  • Praxis II – A series of required state exams for those interested in becoming a licensed educator. Each state has different requirements (e.g., AR and LA do not require Praxis I passage but do require Praxis II). These exams are created and administered by a national organization called Educational Testing Service or ETS.

Look up your state’s requirements here: https://praxis.ets.org/state-requirements.html.

Resources

Testing fees may understandably be hard on the budget. Some guides:

  1. Apply early for the ETS fee waiver: https://praxis.ets.org/test/takers/register-waivers.html

  2. Seek out scholarships in this national database: FastWeb
    1. This will allow you to cover your tuition fees, thereby giving your budget a slight cushion for items like exam fees
  3. Inquire with your district or parish (especially Human Resources or your hiring manager)
    1. Some districts qualify for Title II funds which may be used to reimburse exam registration fees
    2. Some districts will provide reimbursement from the general fund to encourage employees to take the state exams
  4. Reach out to your professional and personal network to see if someone would be willing to sponsor the testing fees as an investment in their community
  5. Plan, Plan, Plan!
    1. What are some creative ways to save a little bit here and there in preparation for the end-of-the-semester registration fees?
