Should I take the 5000 or 7000 series Praxis?
This page applies to Louisiana-based candidates only
Updated 1.21.2025
Which series should I take?
- Either exam series can be utilized, however for the ELA content exam, a Teaching of Reading component is required.
- Either the 5205 plus the 5002, or the 7002 is required to meet the ELA content exam requirement. Clinical Residency eligibility is determined based on meeting the entire ELA content exam requirement (5205 + 5002, or 7002).
- Since the 7000 series is a newer series, it may not be offered as often as the 5000 series. Please keep this in mind when scheduling exams to meet Clinical Residency eligibility requirements.
- ANY COMBINATION of the 5000 and 7000 series Praxis exams are accepted, as long as a Teaching of Reading (TOR) component is included (5205 or 7002).
A SPECIAL NOTE:
The 7002 Teaching Reading exam is highly recommended (not the 5002 exam). Please see the note above regarding schedule availability for this exam.
Here’s why:
- The 7002 bundles the Language Arts (5002) and Teaching Reading (5205) into one exam! The Teaching of Reading component is considered a content exam and adds an additional exam to the required exams needed for Clinical Residency eligibility.
- The cost of the 7002 exam is ~$85 [one payment versus two payments for 5002 (~$64) and 5205 (~$156)]
- The minimum score needed to pass the 7002 is ~138 until 12/31/2026.
- Its passing score is stepped over time:
- 138 is required until 12/31/26
- 147 is required 1/1/27-12/31/28
- 153 is required beginning 1/1/29
