Subject Matter Competency Appeal Process

Below is an overview of the Subject Matter Competency appeal process, including eligibility criteria, required documentation, and steps to submit an appeal.

Eligibility for Appeal

A candidate may submit an appeal if:

  • They believe their coursework was misinterpreted or overlooked during the SMCR review.
  • They have additional supporting documentation (such as updated transcripts, course syllabi, or credentialing information) that was not initially provided.
  • They have recently completed coursework that may satisfy SMCR requirements.

Steps to Submit an Appeal

  1. Review the Initial SMCR Decision
    1. Candidates should carefully review the feedback provided in their SMCR determination email to understand the areas where they did not meet competency requirements.
  2. Gather Supporting Documentation
    1. If appealing based on coursework, candidates should provide:
      1. Official course descriptions or syllabi (links are preferred, if possible).
      2. A letter from their academic institution (if applicable) confirming course content aligns with SMCR standards.
    2. If appealing based on exam results, candidates should provide updated CSET scores or equivalent verification.
  3. Submit Formal Letter of Appeal via Email
    1. Candidates must submit a formal letter of appeal to grad@reach.edu with all supporting documents at the time of submission. Clearly state your reasons for the appeal and why you believe the decision should be overturned.
    2. Supporting documents can include official transcripts, and potentially other supporting documents like test score reports or verification of program completion.
  4. Review Timeline & Decision Notification
    1. Appeals will be reviewed within 10-15 business days from the date of submission.
    2. Candidates will receive an updated SMCR determination via email once the review is complete.

Important Notes

  • Submitting an appeal does not guarantee a change in the SMCR decision.
  • Appeals will only be considered once per applicant per cycle unless substantial new evidence is presented.
  • Candidates are encouraged to contact the Graduate Admissions Team at grad@reach.edu before submitting an appeal if they have questions about eligibility.
