What are the requirements for identifying a District Employed Supervisor (DES) for Intern/M.A.T. candidates at Reach University?

Before an intern begins daily teaching responsibilities and within 30 days of enrollment in an intern program, the employer must identify a DES who meets the CCTC’s criteria. The DES  or other designated individuals must provide adequate supervision, with at least one  DES fulfilling the following minimum qualifications:

  • Possess a valid Clear or Life credential aligned with the intern’s  Credential content area.
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Hold an English learner (EL) authorization (or CLAD, BCLAD, etc.), applicable also to interns pursuing the Early Completion Option (ECO) through Reach.

The  DES must participate in 2 hours of orientation provided by Reach and have completed at least eight (8) hours of formal training in coaching adult learners. Documentation of this training must be submitted to des@reach.edu. If the mentor has not yet completed this training, they must attend the training offered by Reach to meet CCTC requirements.

Importantly, the  DES cannot serve as the intern teacher’s evaluator.

The DES Assignment team facilitates assignments and works closely with employers to verify eligibility criteria and to ensure interns are appropriately assigned. Employers may direct any questions regarding DES assignments to des@reach.edu.
