What is the District Intern Credential? How do I obtain one?

Intern Credential: A Two-Year Temporary License for Aspiring Teachers

An Intern Credential is a temporary license issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) that is valid for 2 years. The intern credential allows the individual to be employed by a school district or county office of education as the teacher of record. During this time, intern teachers are enrolled in an intern credential program to obtain their preliminary teaching credential.

The following steps are required to obtain the Intern Credential:

Step 1: Apply to the Intern Program, offered through Alternatives in Action (AIA), and submit all of the admissions requirements (including the Subject Matter Competency).

Step 2: Receive an acceptance letter, complete the enrollment paperwork, and enroll in Reach University. Candidates are required to be actively enrolled to receive the Intern Credential offered through Alternatives in Action.

Step 3: Successfully complete the Preservice (Reach 210) course with a passing grade.

Once you have completed the three steps, your Intern Credential recommendation will be submitted to the CTC.

Please Note: Reach University is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. Alternatives in Action is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Alternatives in Action provides the Teacher Credentialing programs for Reach candidates in California.
